Static Tournament or League?

Does anyone have an interest in participating in a static tournament or league CIS used to have a static league where participants would upload a 1st half PB (and then all the teams would play each other once) a second half PB (repeat process) and then the playoffs This process of course would be stretched over a period of time (like a month) to allow for tweaking A tournament could be as simple as one upload and the best record wins.

I still like PMFB, but limited time makes it difficult to participate in one of the many draft style leagues (although I am in one now What I am thinking of here is a create your own/point limit type league, I dot think there are any of those around anymore.

Re: Static Tournament or League?

As I suggested to ron... revive the GFL.

I think he does not like 4 uploads, but then if he's the guy to get it back above ground, he can proably pick the number of uploads.  At least have major influence with the decision.

Right now most leagues are struggling to keep enough coaches in them to keep going.
The league with the best influx of new coaches, the NCFL, is now in enough trouble that it is looking at shutting down.

Re: Static Tournament or League?

Bo,

As you know, so far I’ve got interest from 2 people.  Although fun, I also think league play can also lead to a lot of burnout.  What I was hoping for was to get back the people who have since dropped out of league play or the new players looking for some fresh competition (ie playbooks other than the ones that come with the program).  The biggest problem is what rules to use.  I prefer a more open style rule format, but I know others prefer rules that encourge a more realistic simulation.  Perhaps the solution is use a revolving rule format feauring the different existing leagues.  This would solve the problem of having to invent a whole new set of rules and would also give the sponsoring league a chance to showcase itself.  Are the any league comissioners who think this might be a good idea?

Is Rick P still active?  I think I’d really enjoy something like this using the old GFL rules.  Also other than the PFL do any other leagues use a sniffer to enforce their rules?

Re: Static Tournament or League?

I'd be interested in taking part in a static league or tourney, so long as the rules were set up similar to the EFL or UFL. I'm not really interested in playing "pinball". If the goal were to simulate football, I'd be all for it.

Hey Ron

Although I have never played in a static (on purpose), the idea would be worth trying out. I like the idea that Dennis M provided of using either UFL or EFL rules to play. Both seem to be more like real football than others I have been in or looked at.

Keep me informed.

Rick P is still active.  He claimed he was going to re-start the GFL with version 3.0 of PMFB.

The GFL rules would qualify as pinball rules to most.  More liberal than even the WFL these days.

And ron, there have been a few more responses to me, that I have not gotten on to you..

Hey Ron! I loved the old static league on CIS (I also loved the Recreational Challenge Ladder) and would definitely field a team if such a league were resurrected.

Re: Static Tournament or League?

What I liked about CIS was having a sniffer.  The problem I foresee is enforcing whatever rules we are using.  I foresee this as a problem mostly for the people that are new to whatever rule format we are using.  I think a lot of people would unknowingly break UFL type rules (I know I did), how do we deal with that?  I know I wouldn't want the task of overseeing and enforcing all that stuff.  I think the PFL has a sniffer for its rules and there's the old CIS Jon Christie sniffer any others?  Maybe Brian Brinkman has a thought here?

Nevertheless I am glad to see there is a pretty significant interest level here.  Keep it coming folks...

Re: Static Tournament or League?

There are two current sniffers out there.  Neal Guye has one he developed, and rick prescott(there he is again) has one that he says works, but he's still working on before he releases it.

Having a sniffer for rules is excellent, it saves a lot of time, when the rules and the sniffer match up well.  Having a sniffer that checks for everything in a league like the UFL or EFL can be tough though.

I have heard in email from a couple of coaches that are yet to post here too ron.  The response for a static league is signifigant.

One more thing... every league needs a good administrator to run things.  Rick did a great job of the GFL with limited help.  Unless Ron wants to run the show, I think it's worthwhile looking at the GFL and how many rules have to be changed to make it work for what the coaches want today.

Re: Static Tournament or League?

I'd be interested. Another sniffer option would be to use open (to participants) playbooks that a couple GMs or volunteers could inspect a la VNFL. In a static tourney it only has to be done once, and that would make it even more useful and attractive for new coaches getting up to speed for the tough leagues.

Great idea Dan.

It would be great to have open PB's... that would give a chance for newer coaches to learn, and even more ideally have the PB's be listed as open, and put online for new coaches to download and look at.

Most veterans are probably afraid to show their good stuff though.  Not me.

Re: Static Tournament or League?

I agree with Bo, Good Idea Dan.

We can password protect them so that only teams in the league have access (like in VNFL). This would be a good carrot to pull in some of the unknown talent. And if there is a big enough response, there can be 2 divisions. 1 for the vets and 1 for the rookies and less experienced coaches.

I never had a problem with people using my O ideas. But if they use my D ideas their life is in their own hands. ;)

Bo,

Do you have the Neal Guye sniffer, could you send it to me.  What league is it used for?

Oh the Neal Guye sniifer is awesome, how come I never saw this thing before?  The only thing that seems to be missing is the no onsides kick when ahead.  I wonder why he left that out?  Also the OSX version crashed on my computer.

Is it as simple as choosing one of the set of rules that comes with program and going for it?

Re: Static Tournament or League?

It could be that simple or as simple as choosing your own rules and saving it as a new rules set. In my opinion, any league that uses it should have an official rules set that is distributed to all of the coaches to check their books against (so there's no chance of someone checking the wrong box).

If you're having trouble with the OSX version, you might try emailing Neal and see if he has a fix for it.

Neal's sniffer was developed for the NCFL.
He is around and active in the NCFL currently.

I'll let him know there is some chat on his sniffer going on here.

Re: Static Tournament or League?

Okay,

Well it sounds like all that needs to happen is settling on a set of rules and then creating a file for Playbook ref.  All participants would receive the file and playbooks would also be checked before play starts.  Now how to decide which set of rules to use for Static 1?  Also team files, how do we decide on point limits?

Re: Static Tournament or League?

If you're starting the leauge, make them whatever you want. Perhaps you'd want to also consider limiting points per player or we'll all be seeing the return of the the 500 pt HBs and QBs....

Re: Static Tournament or League?

Who said I was starting a league?  :D

Are 500 point RBs the worst thing in the world?  One problem I remember is they are way too dangerous as passers at 500.  I thought about suggesting using the sponsoring leagues team files (ie you pick one of the teams and use their team file), but then all your plays need to be adjusted to the differing player speeds.  The idea is to allow one playbook and team file for the various statics (adjusting for the rules of course).  It is a lot of work to tweak an entire playbook!

Perhaps the old GFL format (400 point limit I believe) is best.  I do think that "hidden slots" should be available somehow.

Re: Static Tournament or League?

GFL did not have a maximum.

In terms of points leagues, there were two basic types, those that had minimums, and those that did not.  The PMFL was an example of a team with no minimums, and you would see a team file where only 23 of the players had points, so they could be maximized.

GFL did have a minimum.  I think it was 200, but it might have been higher.

I definitely think that this type of a tournament should be done points style so that coaches can suit their team file to their existing plays.  It would be a pain to have to change a bunch of plays because we got a wonky team file.

I think there should be a minimum, and I think we should be using the 44 man team file.  As to how man points, well that's a good question... I'd love to see some example 10,000 point team files with all 44 men at least 200 points.... and how many of those players are wasted?  It would be interesting if you ask me.

Re: Static Tournament or League?

I've thought about it and have decided that using hidden slots would be too complicated to govern in a competition of this format.  I keep going back to simplicity.  The simpler format, the more likely it will successful IMHO.

I found the old GFL team file format:

Team files: 10,300/300
  10,300 maximum points
  300 per player minimum

I think this is a time tested format that works, I propose we use it (the only other thing I could suggest is the old “free subs ruleâ€

Re: Static Tournament or League?

Ron,
can you post a checker file for everyone so they are clear on the rules.  You might have to write a few rules other than what's in the checker, just to make sure no-one is going around any of the sim flaws.  I don't think the checker does anything for picks made with movement or pauses.  That is key.
I have a nice team file that is already legal(actually about a dozen of them), so you can count on the Ol' GFL Zen rising their heads and making a comeback in whatever you are calling this.

Hey, take a look at my recruiting thread, maybe you can help build that database.

p.s. and if yer not too wussy maybe you want to come try to stop me from winning 4 championships in a row in the WFL!

Well that's just it I don't want to get into a situation where we do not have a sniffer for a rule we are trying to enforce Can that be added as well as the no onisdes kick when ahead to Neals sniffer I've always felt the catch symbol was a great counter for pick type pass plays Perhaps we should allow the catch symbol on D because of this?

Hey Ron (and all)

Maybe it is time to get a head count as to how many coaches are interested in the league. And how many Teams are needed to recruit to get the first season started.

I like the way the rules are coming so far. Will the PBs be open or closed inside the league?

Also if you wish to avoid the 500 point HBs, set up a rule stating that players can only be maxed out in 2 attributes. Making a player 450 pt max. Just an idea.

Sure can we get a head count here?

I am waiting on getting a full version of Playbook Ref to play around with the program and determine what rules to use.  I reiterate, my thought is to use a revolving rule format to encourage a variety of players to participate.  I envision a series of competitions, not a league...

Willma-8, please start a new thread with the questions you have about PMFB. I think that with the quantity of coaches we have here we could answer the questions you have. As per your email, to properly register Playmaker Football you'll have to purchase the unlock code from Playmaker Inc. Did you ever manage to successfully download the Playmaker Football program and install it?
